Mike Mills to finally score a film and R.E.M. will write a new song for it. 7/9/97: Fox 2000 Pictures has gleefully announced they've signed R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills to score their new movie "A Cool, Dry Place," currently in production, and that R.E.M. will be writing and recording a new song for the film's soundtrack. Fox says that R.E.M. have traditionally refused all offers for motion-picture scoring work and original-song contributions. The movie, now being filmed in Toronto, stars Vince Vaughn ("Swingers," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2"), Joey Lauren Adams ("Chasing Amy," "Michael") and Monica Potter ("Con Air"). The director is John N. Smith, whose credits include the critically acclaimed drama, "The Boys of St. Vincent,'' and the box-office hit "Dangerous Minds," with Michelle Pfeiffer. "A Cool, Dry Place" is based on the novel "Dance Real Slow" by Michael Grant Jaffe. Mills said in a statement: "The book is great, the actors talented and the director brilliant. I can't wait to see the movie." A spokesperson for Fox says a label deal for the soundtrack is currently being negotiated, as is involvement from other recording artists. The film will be released on Twentieth Century Fox next year.
